Since 2009 with great attraction
On the other hand, it quickly became apparent that Apple’s smartphone was not just a nerd gadget, but had had mass appeal at least since the third generation (iPhone 3 GS, 2009). Of course, sales at that point were still a fraction of what they are today. Almost 21 million devices were sold in 2009, two years later this was already a quarterly result. This immense increase in sales also went hand in hand with another development: At the beginning of 2011 it was said for the first time that Apple is now the world’s largest manufacturer of mobile phones – no other provider achieved more sales. The longtime Primus Nokia was therefore in its place.
Inferior in numbers – but significantly more profitable
Ten years later, Apple is still the most profitable manufacturer – depending on the calculation, with more than 80 percent of the profits of the entire market. In terms of quantities, however, Apple does not compete with the abundance of cheap offers. For example, around 215 million iPhones were compared to 315 million Samsung devices last year. Android also has an overwhelming lead over iOS, which is why at first glance it might appear as if Apple is inferior to its Google competitor. However, Apple not only achieves the highest profits, at the same time the App Store also has twice as much sales as the Google Play Store.
