Ten years ago: Apple becomes the world’s largest mobile phone manufacturer

Rumors about an Apple mobile phone had been around for many years before the iPhone was presented in January 2007. Almost all of the forecasts, however, were far from what an iPhone might look like. Before 2007, no one predicted that Apple would reinvent a market, change the entire industry and transform it from a computer to a cell phone manufacturer. The statement of the first iPhone keynote, when Steve Jobs stated that they would like to conquer one percent of the global market, is also well known. It is unknown whether Jobs envisaged this as a realistic assessment or whether it should simply be given a number. Nevertheless, some market observers were unsure at the time whether Apple was not issuing an overly optimistic target.
