Scott gained great renown in Hollywood with cult films such as Alien, Blade Runner and Gladiator. In the latter work he worked with Joaquin Phoenix, who played the Roman emperor Commodus in Gladiator and was most recently awarded an Oscar for his role as Joker. In Kitbag, Phoenix is supposed to take on the role of an emperor again – this time as the protagonist Napoleon Bonaparte. Since Apple has first access to Ridley Scott’s TV projects, the company recently secured the Napoleon film.
“Napoleon is a man I have always been fascinated by”
Scott has been working on making the project a reality for a long time: “Napoleon is a man I’ve always been fascinated by. He came out of nowhere to rule everything – and at the same time was embroiled in a ‘war of love’ with his unfaithful wife Josephine. “Napoleone conquered the world to win her love, Scott told Deadline. When he finally realized his futile efforts to love, he initiated campaigns of destruction – and destroyed himself in the process. The film is about delving deep into Napoleon’s personality, ascent and the motivations for his actions. At the same time, Kitbag is dedicated to the wars of the dictator.
According to Scott, Joaquin Phoenix is the key to implementation: “No actor could portray Napoleon better than Joaquin. In Gladiator he created one of the most complex emperors in film history – with Napoleon he will do it again. ”At the moment there is also no better partner than Apple to present such a story to people all over the world. The viewers have to be patient until they can see the work. Production is not expected to start until the beginning of 2022.
