What is a practical but not indispensable function on devices such as the iPad and Apple Watch looks completely different on the iPhone: A smartphone that has no cellular connection is anything but smart. The user usually has a phone with him – good network coverage is crucial. Now, however, more and more owners of an iPhone 12 model are reporting that their device does not always log into an existing network. In addition to the HomePod mini, which reports problems with the WLAN connection, and some M1 Macs, which cannot maintain the Bluetooth connection at all times, the current iPhones now seem to be struggling with connectivity.
Workarounds reboot and airplane mode
In the meantime, several hundred owners of an iPhone 12 (including all variants) have entered Internet forums like Reddit or at Apple reported to speak. They describe how your device suddenly has no reception – until you restart the phone or briefly activate airplane mode. There does not seem to be a clearly identifiable pattern: The problem occurs with both LTE and 5G connections. The transition between two cell towers has often been identified as the source of the problem, but there are also users who observe the phenomenon when the iPhone is “idle”. While initially customers of the US network operator Verizon drew attention to the problem, those affected from other parts of the world are now also reporting.
No solution in sight
A long-term solution has not yet been found: those affected report that they have already reset the network settings or set up the device as a new iPhone – without success. Deactivating 5G and changing the SIM card also had no consequences. For some users, replacing the iPhone seems to solve the problem. In the meantime, Verizon support has also confirmed the facts to customers – the network operator is working with Apple on a solution.
