Computers are not perfect and many times we are faced with situations that require applying the rule: “reboot is the way”. That is why with the next release of the Apple Mac M1, based on a completely new technology and very different from a MacBook Pro, Air or Mini, we will explain step by step how to perform a forced restart of your Apple computer.
Despite the fact that the technology of the Apple Mac M1 chipset is completely different from those previously released, they follow the same technique to force restart the Intel models. However, not everyone has accessed this type of device and so far have used an older model, or because they have not decided to migrate from a Windows or Linux PC to an Apple computer.
How to force restart a MacBook Pro M1 from Apple?
First we will start with the step-by-step explanation of how to force restart a MacBook Pro M1. The first model in this series of Apple computers that we will focus on will be the 13-inch version.
If at any time you find yourself with a frozen screen or simply turned on but no response, you simply have to press and hold the Touch ID button. This button is located to the right of the Touch Bar and is also the power button of your Mac.
Long press will turn the screen black and the computer will shut down. After waiting for a few seconds, you must press the Touch ID or power button again until we see the Apple logo on the screen.
Finally, once the logo is displayed on the screen it will start up successfully. For greater peace of mind once the MacBook Pro M1 starts we can perform a restart in the normal way.
How to force restart MacBook Air M1?
The next device in this cheat tutorial to perform a force restart is the new model of MacBook Air with M1 chipset. The procedure is identical to the MacBook Pro, even though the Air does not have a Touch Bar.
To be able to force a restart on the MacBook Air with M1 it will only be enough to locate it in the upper right corner of the keyboard, next to the touch bar, the Touch ID or the power button. As we explained before, it will only be enough to hold it down until the screen turns completely black.
Once the screen of our MacBook Air is black, we will have to wait a few seconds and press the Touch ID button again until we see the Apple logo.
Mac Mini M1 force restart
The two previous models we could see that the way to perform a reset were very similar, only modified the location of the Touch ID. However with the Mac Mini M1 everything changes.
First of all, the Mac Mini’s dedicated power button is located on the back next to the power inlet. Once it is found, we must keep it pressed until the screen turns black.
Then, and like the previous models, we will have to press it again and wait for the screen of the Mac Mini M1 to turn on again and we will see the Apple logo.
Tips and clarifications on forced restart
Now that you know how to perform a forced restart on Macs with Apple Silicon M1, you will not have any problem continuing with your tasks if it does not respond. However, some details must be taken into account.
When we use our Apple computer, the best we can do is turn it off in a traditional way if we do not continue to use it or, every certain number of days, perform a reboot by the “standard way”. However, sometimes we are presented with situations such as when the computer freezes completely and stops responding, we notice an excessive slowness that does not allow us a normal restart, or other strange behaviors that need an immediate interruption.
It is for this reason that it should never be considered as a normal way to hold the power button to turn it off. On the other hand, after carrying out a forced restart it is important that it be turned off correctly or restarted again but already using step by step without the need for it to be sudden.
It should be noted that if we are working or studying and our Mac has stopped responding and we must proceed to a forced restart, all our work will not be saved. It is for this reason that it is very important to use this method in situations in which our Apple computer does not respond by any means.
Alternative method of restarting an Apple computer
Finally, to restart our Apple computer we can also use what is called the shortcut. In this case, all you have to do is hold down the Control and Command keys on the keyboard, plus the power button.
By performing this procedure we will force the Mac to restart without asking whether we want to save the open or unsaved documents. If you are using an Intel MacBooks without a Touch ID button, you can also use this shortcut or keep the button on.
