At first, the rumor mill assumed that Apple would present the AirTags in autumn 2019 – but Apple didn’t say a word about the labels at the presentation of the iPhone 11. Spring 2020 also passed without a corresponding presentation and there was no trace of the AirTags at the three Apple events in autumn 2020. It is completely unclear what led to the delays – but since the first indications were found in iOS 13, it can be assumed that Apple was already planning the introduction for autumn 2019.
Video of the pairing process
Jon Prosser, well-known Apple leaker with a high hit rate, claims to have come across an animation created by Apple, which should appear when the AirTags are coupled:
The video shows the short animation from time stamp 6:50. The AirTags seem to have a metal underside on which the apple logo and the words “AirTag – Designed by Apple in California – Assembled in China – Bluetooth LE – Ultra Wideband” can be seen. The actual case is apparently made of white plastic.
Release date in March?
It is still unclear when Apple will actually present the AirTags – the next possible date would be March. Apple often presents new products in the spring and this year the MacBook Pro and iMac with the M1 chip, new iPad Pro models and new AirPods are on the program. If there is no introduction in March, interested parties will probably have to wait until autumn 2021.
