10 years ago: Apple discontinued the Xserve

Exactly ten years ago, Apple said goodbye to a market segment and announced that it would no longer develop rack servers. In 2002, Apple introduced the first Xserve and wanted to enter a new market with it. It turned out, however, that there was interest in server solutions from Apple, but Apple never developed into a major provider in the server business. The server version of Mac OS X was even older than the normal version: even before Mac OS X came onto the market, Apple introduced Mac OS X Server. The system surface did not yet correspond to what was later introduced with Mac OS X (Aqua), but the substructure was completely new.
