Server configurations instead of server cabinets
After the Xserves was discontinued, Apple offered special server configurations for the Mac Pro for a while, as well as the Mac mini server. Apple argued that in terms of performance, the devices are set up well enough for almost all areas of application – users only have to say goodbye to the possibility of mounting the devices in a conventional server rack.
Even if Apple called the Xserve an important product for a long time, there was little mourning about the discontinuation of the series. The large number of normal users probably never quite realized the point of the product anyway.
2019: There is another rack Mac
Last summer, on the other hand, the “rack mount” made another comeback, because the completely redeveloped Mac Pro is also available in landscape format. While the regular Mac Pro is currently available from 6,335.15 euros, the Mac Pro “Rack” costs at least 7,017.50 euros. The latter has mounting rails so that the device can be mounted in a server cabinet – the interior, on the other hand, corresponds to the Mac Pro on feet. Even if the server version certainly does not find mass sales, it is still to be welcomed that Apple is addressing this market segment again.
